Then vs Now: From Bedroom DJ to Controlling the Room

Updated: Mar 21

Most people see the lights, the crowd, and the final set.

They don’t see the years it took to learn how to control the room.

This is that story.

🎵 Where It All Started (2018)

This didn’t start on a stage. It started as a bedroom tinkering project in 2018.

But it wasn’t random curiosity.

Music had always been a part of me — from years of classical training to over a decade working with sound. I understood how music is built. I understood how it should feel.

What I hadn’t stepped into yet… was performance.

DJing became that bridge.

From understanding music — to creating moments with it.

🌍 The Pandemic Shift — When It Got Real

During the pandemic, something shifted.

What started as small, intimate gigs within my circle slowly began to feel different.

It wasn’t just about playing music anymore. People started noticing. Reacting.

Coming back for more.

And more than anything, they kept telling me:

“You should take this seriously.”

That was the first time it felt like this could be more than just a hobby.

Like this wasn’t just something I enjoyed —

but something I could build.

That momentum carried into the first real test — stepping back into a full event.

🔥 2022 — Figuring It Out

My first gig after the world opened back up. I still remember walking into that venue.

My setup was simple:

a controller, a 4-channel mixer, one wired mic, and my laptop.

But the real challenge wasn’t the music. It was everything around it.

The wiring & integration.

The unfamiliar sound system at the venue.

The uncertainty of how everything would come together in a real venue.

I showed up early. Really early.

Not to be perfect —

but to make sure it worked.

And slowly… it did.

The excitement of being behind the decks never left — it still hasn’t.

That feeling of crafting every transition, every moment, and being fully present in the music… that’s the same even today.

But that night, there were nerves.

And underneath it all, one thought:

Just make this work.

Because at that point, I wasn’t trying to impress anyone.

I was just…

Figuring it out...

🌙 The Grind No One Sees

What people don’t see in a “Then vs Now” story is the in-between.

The late nights.

The repetition.

The constant learning.

I spent countless hours refining the craft — practicing transitions, building sets, studying how energy flows through a room, and experimenting with what works and what doesn’t.

Because the real challenge isn’t just playing music.

It’s learning how to shape an entire night.

How to tell a story through sound.

How to read a room.

How to connect with people you’ve never met.

And the truth is — that pursuit never ends.

⚡ The Turning Point — Controlling the Room

At some point, something shifts. You stop just playing music…

…and you start controlling the room.

For me, that moment hit during Rangotsav 2025.

A massive crowd. Thousands of people. Hrithik Roshan on stage — waiting for the cue.

But here’s what made it different.

There wasn’t a clear plan.

Backstage was chaotic. Things were moving fast. No one had fully locked in how that moment would play out.

I calmly stepped in and asked if I could help.

Because I had come prepared.

I had my skeleton. I knew that moment was coming.

What I didn’t know was when — or how quickly it would all unfold.

It happened suddenly.

So I had to build into it in real time.

Play the right songs leading up to it.

Hold back enough energy so the moment could peak.

And still have something left after, so the night didn’t just drop off.

There was no template to follow.

Just instinct, preparation, and reading the room as it happened.

Everything felt amplified.

The pressure.

The responsibility.

The timing.

And then the moment arrived.

I hit play — the intro of “Ek Pal Ka Jeena” filled the space.

Hrithik dropped his signature moves and the crowd lost it.

And suddenly — the entire place erupts.

The energy. The noise. The movement.

For a second, I just stood there and took it in.

Because in that moment, it wasn’t just about playing the right track.

It was about owning that exact second.

Feeling the crowd move.

Feeling the timing land perfectly.

Knowing it all came together.

And even then…

a part of me couldn’t believe what was happening.

🛠️ When Things Go Wrong — And You Still Deliver

Not every moment is perfect.

And some of the biggest growth comes from when things don’t go as planned.

There was a night when my Mac and Rekordbox suddenly stopped working — right in the middle of a packed dance floor. No warning. No backup system ready to go.

Just silence… waiting to happen.

But panic doesn’t help in those moments. So I adapted.

I switched to an iPad, ran a single channel, and used roll effect to keep transitions alive.

The music never stopped.

The energy never dropped.

Another time, a speaker cable failed mid-event. Different problem. Same mindset.

Because I stay organized and know my setup inside out, I knew exactly what I had and where to find it.

Quick adjustment. Spare connector. Back up and running — all while keeping the music going and the energy intact.

Because at the end of the day, being a DJ isn’t just about playing music.

👉 It’s about making sure the night continues — no matter what.

Because when things go wrong, that’s when experience really shows.

🎶 What Makes My Sets Different

I’m a high-energy open format DJ who controls the room.

But what that really means is:

No two nights are ever the same.

Every crowd is different.

Every room feels different.

Every set evolves in real time.

One night it’s Punjabi or Pakistani energy.

Another, it’s Tamil kuthu.

Another, a 90s rave blending pop, rock, hip-hop, and EDM.

Another, Bollywood layered with Latin rhythms.

I prepare for every event. But I don’t script it.

I come in with a structure — a direction.

What comes to life is shaped in the moment.

Because great artists don’t repeat. They evolve.

And that mindset comes from years of learning how music should feel — not just how it sounds.

🎤 Today — Delivering a Premium Experience

Today, as a Bay Area open format DJ, I focus on delivering high-energy, culturally diverse experiences — from weddings and private events to large-scale celebrations — where the goal is not just music, but creating a complete, unforgettable atmosphere.

🎉 What a Great Night Means to Me

A great night isn’t just about a packed dance floor.

It’s about how it feels when it’s over.

When the host walks away tired —but smiling.

Still feeling the energy. Still replaying the moments.

That “party fever” that lingers even after it ends.

That’s the goal.

Every single time.

🚀 From Passion to Purpose

This started as curiosity.

Then became passion.

Now, it’s purpose.

In late 2024, I made it official — turning this into a business and building something I could grow.

Not just playing events.

But delivering something consistent, reliable, and elevated every single time.

🎶 Building Something Bigger

Today, as an open format DJ in the Bay Area, this is more than just DJing.

I’m building curated experiences that bring people together through music and energy:

  • Desi Heat — premium nightlife experiences rooted in South Asian music and culture

  • Cali Fusion Nights* — open format, high-energy events blending global sounds for a diverse audience

This is about more than events.

It’s about creating spaces where music, culture, and crowd energy come together.

🔁 Then vs Now — What Really Changed

Not just the gear.

Not just the gigs.

What changed is how I approach every event.

• Mindset — from playing tracks to owning the outcome of the night

• Confidence — built through real experience across all kinds of events

• Control — knowing how to read the room and move energy in real time

• Evolution — learning from every event and bringing that into the next one

Whether it’s a massive crowd or an intimate celebration, that learning shows up in how I prepare, adapt, and deliver.

🌱 8 Years In… Still Getting Started

Eight years sounds like a long time.

But honestly?

It still feels like the beginning.

Because this doesn’t end.

You just keep getting better. More aware. More intentional.

And that’s what keeps it exciting.

🎧 For Anyone Thinking About DJing… But Scared

If you’re thinking about DJing but holding yourself back, start here:

You need a growth mindset.

And you need to genuinely love it.

Because DJing isn’t for everyone. From the outside, it looks exciting.

But behind the scenes, it takes discipline, sacrifice, and a deep commitment to the craft.

There are long nights. Moments of doubt. Times when things don’t go your way.

And you still have to show up.

Again.

And again.

And again.

Just like any other art form —you don’t just do it.

You commit to it.

So if you’re drawn to it…

Start. Figure it out. Grow into it.

🔥 Final Thought

If there’s one thing DJing taught me, it’s this:

Show up. Stay consistent. Fall in love with the process — over and over again.
